As I see the evolution of content there are various trends.
40 years ago, you bought a book, you can borrow, gift it, make copies of it to copy machines and give them away.
20 years ago or so there was a major shift with GNU/Linux and copy left licenses like GPL and compatible. Software can be free and everyone can make changes provided that distributing copies to other people includes the source code.
