The idea of neuroplasticity is not a new one. It was first theorized over 120 years ago. While there is some compelling evidence to suggest that the concept has been around longer than this, the first dated record of neuroplasticity seems to be in William James’ book “The Principles of Psychology,” published in 1890. The notion that neuroplasticity is a new, or fad, science is just not the case.
Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to adaptively rearrange connections, altering both structure and function of the nervous system. The brain can rewire itself creating changes not only biochemically but also morphologically in certain brain areas like neuronal networks, neuronal connectivity, and the generation of new neurons. These changes can happen not only as a result of the regular developmental process, but also trauma, chemical imbalances, experiences both positive and negative, and purposefully with intention, planning, and practice.
The goals of this course are to gain a fundamental understanding of neuroplasticity, how the brain works, explore current research in the field of neuroplasticity, examine the influence neuroplastic principles can have in daily life, and consider how these principles inform the health and healing process and how they can be used to positively improve the quality of life for all.
